Designers Talks
Autumn Term 2008 for Design Products
Julia Lohmann
… “one artist in the UK is using discarded sheep stomachs to make delicate, lace-like lamps. That could have been some might delicious haggis, though. We think the lamps look beautiful — they resemble honeycombs in texture and colour — but we don’t really get the “Ew! Sheep stomachs! Surprise!” factor she’s going for.”
Sebastien Noel
“The Troika partnership, run by Conny Freyer, Sebastien Noel and Eva Rucki, is one of the RCA’s most successful recent graduate collaborations. They have broken new ground in their multidisciplinary approach to projects and, since their establishment in 2003, have collected an impressive client list including the BBC, the Science Museum, MTV and Thames & Hudson.
Gitta Gschwendtner
“My designs are often about normal things that have gone a bit strange,” says Gitta Gschwendtner. “Obviously functionality is important, but I want my work to be more demanding. Some pieces take on a life of their own.”
Andre Klauser and Ed Carpenter
“André Klauser graduated from Design Products in 2002 and set up his own practice in the same year. He currently works from his studio in East London on a wide range of design led projects. Next to his solo projects he often works in collaboration with Ed Carpenter under the name Klauser and Carpenter.
Onkar Kular
Onkar, born 1974, studied at Kingston University before completing a Masters in Design Products at the Royal College of Art in 2002. He uses design as a medium to engage with a broad range of social and cultural issues, from the quest for domestic perfection to celebrity obsession, from reality football simulations to baking super functional bread.
Tomek Rygalik
“My work in consultancy I saw had become somewhat formulaic, efficient but not necessarily experimental.” On the Design Products course Rygalik found “I could break all the boundaries I was afraid of breaking in my professional life.”
Sebastian Bergne
To coincide with an exhibition to be held at the Aram Gallery, recently appointed Visiting Professor Sebastian Bergne will give a lecture about his work at 6.00 pm on Friday 28th November in the main Lecture Theatre .
